Don't Respect Your Client

Don't Respect Your Client

One time, I went to the doctor because I was sick.

Picture a doctor in your head. Now this guy strolls in wearing a hoodie, overweight, zero energy. He spoke like he didn't care whether I lived or died - like he was forced to be there.

And then it hit me: I wasn't just judging his advice. I was judging him. His clothes, his shape, his attitude.

I still hate that doctor, by the way. Not because of what he prescribed. Because of how he carried himself.

Here's the lesson

Your client is doing the same thing to you, every single moment.

The way you show up - your website, your DMs, your invoice, your voicemail, the photo you use on LinkedIn - they're all under the microscope. People decide whether to trust you with their money in the first 3 seconds. And they decide it based on signals you might not even be paying attention to.

It's not about being fake. It's about not being sloppy.

Specifically:

  • Your website: looks built in 2014? You look like a 2014 business.
  • Your social posts: low effort? You look like a low-effort operator.
  • Your reply time: 4 days? You look like you don't care.
  • Your offer: vague? You look like you don't know what you do.

Each of those is a small signal. Stack 5 of them and you've already lost the sale before you ever got on a call.

So what do I mean by "don't respect your client"?

I mean: don't assume they'll forgive the small stuff because you're "good at the actual work." They won't. They'll quietly book your competitor who looked the part - even if your work is better.

Dress the way you want to be treated. Build the brand you want to be paid like.
